About author

Loreta Švaikauskienė (born in 1967, Kaunas) is one of the most prominent Lithuanian contemporary textile artists, who has won numerous international prizes at exhibitions. She is a Board member of the Kaunas Biennial and an Associate Professor at Vilnius Academy of Arts. The works by L. Švaikauskienė have been acquired by national museums and private collectors. The artist often collaborates with well-known architects in creating impressive panels for public and private interiors.

Numerous prizes at international exhibitions have been awarded to L. Švaikauskienė for her unique textile technique, which allows the artist to create visually expressive three-dimensional pieces. Her objects become more effective by applying unique artistic materials – the deception of textile. Looking at L. Švaikauskienė’s textile objects it is easy to be deceived: the fine details of the artwork are made from synthetic fabric, giving the impression of metal or porcelain. Old Egyptian, Renaissance, Baroque or Romanticism epoch ornaments in textile panels or stylised mirror frames, which have been created for interior spaces, give them the status of an artwork. L. Švaikauskienė’s works are contextual and multi-layered. The skilled eye of the viewer will find accents from different eras in her pieces – mythological elements rising from fairy tales and legends. Her created interiors make you feel like you are present in the old Egyptian banqueting halls and the gold mirror exhibitions-installations transferring you to the supressed “reflections” of the subconscious, where the self-identification processes take place.
